THEME 4: CULTURE

"Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit."

Jawaharlal Nehru

The image in the logo in the top left is the sand mandala created in Oglethorpe University Museum of Art (Atlanta, Georgia), by Tibetan monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery. The monks made more than a dozen of these healing mandalas across America for healing and protection after September 11.

Add your vision of the meaning of culture to this page.

What would it look like in a song, or a piece of art, in fashion, or in poetry? Find a quote that gives meaning to the concept or make up your own. This is a project with no end.

Think about it - can any definition ever be complete?

Let's watch to see what happens.
In my opinion, Culture is several things. It is:
  • the way you act around your family
  • the way you were raised
  • the way you think
  • the things you like
  • your attitude
  • your opinions
  • what you think whenever you see something out of the ordinary or something foreign to you.

An example of this would be these two different youtubes:

The Official Music Video for Whispers in the Dark by Skillet A 'Gaara Tribute' to 'Whispers in the Dark' by Skillet

Sorry that takes up so much space.

These two YouTubes show the differences that different aspects of culture insinuate. For example, the music video focuses mainly on the singer and it has a more standoffish, religious feel. The Gaara tribute is more personal and the subject of the video, Gaara, is the one it's being sung about. There are thousands more videos, pictures and stories that revolve around this song and each one is an example of culture because no one is the same and we all think of things differently.

Yours,

The tree shows how growth and change happens all over the world and that our knowledge of one another is a great thing and it is life (the tree) that we should value above all else. Our culture is not nearly as important between the connections (branches) between others."

Evan,

You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.
Indira Gandhi (1917 - 1984), quoted by Christian Science Monitor, May 17, 1982

“If everybody is looking for it, then nobody is finding it. If we were cultured, we would not be conscious of lacking culture.
